Literature Text

A group of five hunters stood over their latest victory in a forest not far from the village of Erona.  A Yian Kut Ku, bird-like wyvern with a large beak and giant ears.  Though one of the weakest of known wyverns, it was a major victory for the group of novice hunters.

There was Aramis, the “leader” of the group, wielding a greatsword crafted from bones.  Next to Aramis stood Rukasu, his best friend, who carried a simple iron sword and shield.  To the opposite side of the dead wyvern was Bokaru and Arianna, the couple of the gang.  Bokaru had a greatsword similar to that of Aramis’, while Arianna had a bone sword and shield.  Lastly was Valin, the independent one of the hunters, who had a simple hunter’s blade and shield.

“Good job, guys,” Aramis said, wiping the sweat from his brow.

“Yeah, let’s clean up here and head back home,” Rukasu replied, already carving desirable pieces from the kut ku carcass.

Suddenly, they all heard a roar from above, then Arianna noticed a shadow of a wyvern flying overhead.  There was a crash in the distance as the wyvern landed.

“If I recognize that shadow, and from the sound of that roar…I think we have a rathalos on our hands,” Aramis said, a curious expression on his face, “think we can take it?”

“I say we go for it!” Rukasu answered, throwing his fist in the air.

“I dunno…a rathalos?  We barely beat this kut ku.  We’d need time to rest and re-supply,” Bokaru argued, concern plastered on his face.

“He’s right, I think it’s better to finish up here and leave before the rathalos comes,” Arianna concurred, drawing close to Bokaru.

“Well, I say we could handle it.  So that’s two aye and two nay.  What do you say Valin?  You’re the deciding vote,” Aramis decreed.  With that, everyone turned to Valin, who was stretching.

“I don’t really care…” Valin began, rubbing his chin, “I say we go for it?”

Just as the group turned towards the direction where they had heard the rathalos earlier, a fireball came crashing through the woods.  Aramis got his sword up to block just in time to take the blow head on.  In a burst o f flames and shattering bones, Aramis went flying backward.  With another roar, a blue-scaled wyvern came crashing through the woods.  It had the appearance of a rathalos, at least as far as any of the novice hunters could tell, but its scales shone a dark blue color, and it’s eyes burned with fury.  Before anyone could react, the wyvern swung its head into Bokaru, knocking him away.  A swing of the tail sent Valin tumbling, and with another fireball, this one directed at the ground, the wyvern flew backwards a few yards.

“I don’t believe it…it’s a blue rathalos!” Rukasu stammered, barely able to hold up his weapon.

The rathalos’ head snapped to the side to glare at Rukasu, then with a swoop of the neck, the wyvern head butted the hunter into the air and released a blast of fire.  Rukasu went soaring through the air just before hitting a tree and tumbling downward.

Valin was the first to his feet, looking up just in time to see Arianna get hip-checked by the wyvern.  She, too, visited the ground real soon.

The wyvern’s attention turned to Valin, murder in its eyes.  With a roa and a rear of its wings, the beast charged at Valin, who was paralyzed with fear.  Out of nowhere, Bokaru leaped to the charge, sword held up to block.  Teeth locked with blade in a perpetual hold as Bokaru worked to keep his footing firm against the rathalos.

“Get Rukasu and Aramis out of here.  I’ll hold it off!” Bokaru shouted, struggling with the beast.

Valin glanced around, but Aramis was nowhere in sight.  Rukasu, however, was just starting to struggle to his feet, heat radiating off his battered armor.  Rushing to aid his fellow hunter, Valin helped Rukasu up, and together they began to run to where they thought Erona would be.  Just then, the two heard a cry and turned to see the blue rathalos crush Bokaru’s sword, and used what was left of it to fling him in the air.  Arianna was up by this time and hurried over to Bokaru.  The wyvern was quicker, however, tail-slapping her into a tree, where she slumped over, seemingly lifeless.  Again the wyvern’s attention turned to Valin and Rukasu, who held on to each other for dear life.  Throwing its head back, the two knew they were in trouble as the blue beast began to unleash another wake of fire.  The blast was interrupted by a shrill of pain.  The two hunters opened their eyes to see the wyvern topple over, smoke pouring from its mouth.  Aramis stood there, bloodied and battered, jamming what was left of his shattered greatsword into the monster’s side.  Stumbling backwards, it was clear to Valin and Rukasu that Aramis was barely conscious.

“That’s…for breaking my sword…yeah!” Aramis said, throwing a half-hearted punch at the rathalos just before he crumbled to the ground.

“I should be able to make it on my own, Valin, you go save Aramis,” Rukasu told Valin, who was already turning to help his fallen comrade.  Just as he began to take off, Bokaru ran past them, Arianna in his arms.  Again Rukasu looked at Valin, who merely nodded and dashed away.

The rathalos, how back on its feet, moved in to finish his prey.  Chomping downward, the monster was surprised when it bit its own tongue and not human flesh.  Turning its head, the wyvern spotted Valin, Aramis slung over his back, running into the woods.  Unleashing a blast of fire in anger, the wyvern took flight to outrun them.

Valin felt the heat of the fire behind him, yet he kept running, ignoring the shadow that now loomed over him.  He heard the rush of flames, spun on his heels and diverted to the left, just in time to dodge a fireball slamming into the ground beside him.  Again he twisted to avoid another fireball, this time losing his balance with Aramis’ dead weight on his shoulder, and tumbled backwards, down a steep hill, and into a small creek.  Pulling Aramis out of the water, he made sure they were both out of sight of the wyvern, then finally stopped to take a breather.  Thinking it might make him more comfortable, Valin took Aramis’ helmet off and set it aside.  He was surprised to see part of his usually shaggy hair singed.

Rukasu ran as fast as his wounds would allow him, not knowing what might be behind him.  He came into a clearing to find Bokaru and Arianna, who was just coming to.

“Where’s the other two?” Bokaru asked.

“I don’t know…Valin ran in the other direction with Aramis.  I think he was trying to draw the wyvern’s attention away so we could escape,” Rukasu said somberly.

“Let’s go back for them then,” Arianna replied, pulling herself to her feet, “they’d do the same for us.”

Bokaru and Rukasu looked at one another and nodded.  So the three turned back to find their missing friends, even if it meant facing the blue rathalos again.
Here's the first part to a little series I'm starting about some of my friends' characters from Monster Hunter Freedom. I didn't put this one under Fan-Fiction, because as I think of it...seeing that MH doesn't really have any "main" or "solid" characters, you can't exactly be a fan of anyone, thus not a fan-fic. :P
Either way, enjoy the first part.

Good job! I too am about to start a long monster hunter fan fiction series! The main characters include a great sword user, hammer, heavy gunner, a character named K.O., and a special girl. My hunter and my friends hunters will be making cameos. Watch me if you want to see it.
